The Heart Bug Teacup S

$36.00

Make teatime extra special every morning with these babies.

This piece is made with a special underglaze stencil that is then outlined with carving detail.

“Sgraffito” is an artistic technique in which a layer of color (usually slip or underglaze) is added on top of the clay while it is still leather-hard. Then the top layer is scratched or carved away to show the clay underneath and to reveal a pattern or design. Once the piece has dried, it is fired in a kiln. A glossy glaze is added and the piece is fired again to a higher temperature.

If you look closely, you can see where all the clay was carved away. It's a long process and can take up to 2 hours to just do the carving (not including the creation of the mug, the under-glazing and the glazing and the 2 firings) Each piece is carved by hand without patterns - these are all my own freeform drawings. Each piece is completely unique and one of a kind. So, even if you see a few mugs with similar drawings, no two are the same.

It is a piece of art.

*All of my work is handmade using slabs, pinching or coiling methods so you may see how my hands manipulated the clay with their perfect imperfections. They can be put in the microwave or the dishwasher, but as with any handmade item, they will last much longer with handwashing and gentle care.

Each piece varies, but the large size mugs hold approximately 10 oz, the medium size holds 8 oz, the small size holds 6 oz, and the espresso mugs hold 3 oz.
